I’ve been writing a manifesto to Build a Better Community. I recently heard a quote that resonated with me. Reese from Person of Interest said “We don’t need jobs. We need a purpose.” This was the most resounding statement I had ever heard because in my opinion this is exactly what we as a people are missing.
While doing research on unemployment and underemployment, I found the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) News Release which was publicized on September 5, 2014. It has officially been concluded that the unemployment rate in the United States is 6.1% for August 2014. How does this branch of the government come to this conclusion?
Does 6.1% take into consideration civilians who are underemployed? I think this a very serious issue. On the BLS website the overall unemployed and underemployed stat for August 2014 is a whopping 12.0%. With that said, the Economic Policy Institute finds that a total of 16.8 percent of new grads are “underemployed,” meaning they’re either jobless and hunting for work; working part-time because they can’t find a full-time job; or want a job, have looked within the past year, but have now given up on searching. What are we the people doing about this?
Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) collected test results from about 28 million 15 year old students representing 65 countries in 2012. In the key findings of the PISA 2012 results, US ranks 27th in math, 17th in reading and 20th in science out of the 34 OECD countries. To top it off we also spend more per student than most countries. When my son was in the second grade, he came home saying the school told the kids to tell the parents that C is average and okay! I was floored! In my household growing up a C was equivalent to an F now we are being told that a C is okay. With that in mind are we as a nation trying to be average?
When a young adult graduates and enters the workforce, majority had been taught to follow when many companies need fresh eyes to more updated and scalable systems. To make matters worse, companies prefer to focus on share holders and the bottom line; while too many workers are doing just enough to not get fired. Many work environments are based on competition and the fear of losing one’s job. Think… how does one usually get a promotion within a department? A higher up needs to be fired, laid off, or retire. Job Security doesn’t exist anymore. When the average person gets a “promotion” do they receive a salary increase to go with the additional workload?
I think society can only be changed from the bottom up and with a people who accept the need to change and have the courage to move in a different direction. I want my community to benefit from “forward” thinking and proven results. The era of the corporation has ended. While people are looking for jobs, are being exploited for inadequate pay, or are limited to part time hours for full time work, there is a whole other way of making a living. While some condemn all network marketing as pyramid schemes, one must ask one’s self hasn’t there been conventional companies where a vast majority of the employees were left with nothing when a few key people financially gained. Moreover, isn’t failure more likely if one isn’t taught the basic skills needed to succeed?
