Non-Profit Fundraising and SHOWING MY BRILLIANCE

I work with non-profit organizations reward their supporters while fundraising. The program is part of what Amazon Smiles does but it also has a point system that leverages the community’s normal spending.Today I got to speak to a new non-profit who’s focus is helping women with cancer. Right now they are working on the Cinderella Project which helps girls with cancer be able to attend prom with donated dresses. Very worthy cause! From that meeting I got a referral and forever business thinking I told her that we should start up her group first then sponsor the referred church so that her group would have the leverage of the second group. YAY!

Do you ever just feel like you are doing what you are supposed to be doing with your life? I noticed that when I get to present, train new distributors and office staff of Non-profits and Health Professionals, and work the business with business minded individuals I feel a kinda buzz within. I feel alive and purposeful! I LOVE THAT!

Yesterday I got to talk with GMYS decision maker and they are launching a new website. I will have to write up the code to link their site up with their fundraising site (thank goodness that I learned how to program all those years ago!). I also have to write up templates of announcing the fundraising site. Once I get these items completed I have a system that new NPOs will be able to follow!

Later today I have a networking event with “over 200 Miami professionals”. I’m looking forward to this event! The other thing is that last week I had an event and someone wanted to talk to me about the business. As it turned out he was sick from the Thursday until Sunday, so he contacted me this morning and set up a quick appointment for 6p right before the event! I’m excited to talk with him.

A prospect contacted me about changing her presentation tomorrow morning to Thursday. The wonderful thing about this meeting is that she wants me to present to her and 2 other people who are interested in starting a business. The cool thing is that one is from Jamaica and the other is from England! Thankfully my company operates in both countries and delivers to over 200. If you are open to learn more about the company, contact me!

Reconnecting with Friends

Connections - Tom Ford

Over the weekend, a high school friend had her birthday party. I’ve been invited to attend since we reconnected on Facebook after my return to Miami 13 years ago.

I am so happy that I went as I got to reconnect with so many people with whom I haven’t seen in YEARS! But what struck me even more was my friend Renee and the realization that if one was lucky to be befriended by her, she would ALWAYS be a True Friend! Before the guests arrived (yes I got there ON TIME – so basically VERY Early) I got to spend time with Renee. And when people started arriving she would check up on me. Asking if I was ok. I saw people from high school and college.

She values her friendships and I’m honored that she considers me a friend.

Building and maintaining relationships are something that people facing entrepreneurs and employees must excel at in order to be successful.

Building a relationship starts with first impressions and building rapport. I remember being a door to door sales person who was asked to join the home owners for dinner 9 days out of 10. Why? Because I wanted to save them money with their telecommunication services. Yes I got paid on commission but people saw that I truly wanted to help them. When I saw that someone was buying the best they could afford, I would tell them so. I got so many phone calls from neighbors, family and friends who wanted me to visit them.

I’ve stated in past entries that I truly LOVED this job! It was my favorite as I got to be outside all day, meet about 1000 people weekly and made a positive difference in their household. I had that position in 2008 and STILL have people approach me in stores, street fairs, and various events to say Hi… most address me by name! I love building relationships!

What I’m not so good at is maintaining them. Being that I’m a single mom and entrepreneur my calender is full of swim meets, school events, networking events, social gatherings, etc. (excuse!) I am usually close to one person at a time for non business reasons. Recently I’ve been working with and training small groups of entrepreneurs for business, but after this event I think I will start making each relationship more personal.

I was listening to a speaker who said that they chose to work with like minded people who “I would look forward to go on vacation with”. That is what I want! When I meet someone I pay attention to their personality, ambition and drive before bringing up what I do. If I don’t get along with a person, they are negative or have the mentality “I am always right”, I choose to walk away. This way I build a strong team of people who are determined to succeed AND have a fun time working together.

Are you tired of what you do or at least open to hearing about this opportunity? Are you hard working and want to enjoy the fruit of your labor? Do you want to know everything you are working for is beneficial to you, your family and your community? Reach out to me. I would like to hear what you are looking for.

Social Media

Go together Make a Difference

A friend of mine says she needs to unplug because “social media is a machine” and. On “YouTube to Twitter… to my blogs and vlogs… rotation fb and discussion” she started receiving death threats and angry comments after which she blocked comments. She said all posts were beneficial and that she had “many followers”. I know that her posts (those that I saw/read) were interesting, but it was just about her.

What I want to know is what is the purpose of social media if not to engage? How does one effectively use Social Media to engage people? How does one find the people of their tribe? In my case the passionate people who want to make a difference in their community.

I’m tired of reading articles and being marketed on how to gain thousands of followers. I’m not looking for followers. I’m looking for equals. I’m looking for People who not only read/watch what I may post but who also link thoughts, brainstorm and truly connect.

The internet has made the world much smaller by connecting people who probably would never have met otherwise, but how many people seem to use the internet is like a tv – very one sided like the news anchor telling a story. The audience is passively just listening.

How do people like #EllenDegeneres get so many of her people to talk with her? #Ellen is one of my favorite people. Her followers engage with her and are recognized sometimes to the point that she calls them or invites them to her show. I would love a relationship with my tribe.

How do I find passionate people who want to make a difference in their community and who would like to join me in leading others to become leaders?

New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions

This year has been a world of change for us.

In April Keegan did the swim leg of a triathlon. In May we went to Jamaica for a swim meet with the Flying Fish Swim Club. My son graduated from middle school and started high school. In September Miami Dade College closed its pool to the public meaning we had to leave and no longer swim under the name Flying Fish. He loves his school, his program and swimming for his school.

In February I got bronchitis again. In April at the triathlon I got a severe case of poison oak and left my job. In May I got to go back to Jamaica for the first time in 21 years. I enjoyed seeing friends and family. In June I was able to go to Vegas for Insanity Bootcamp that changed my views of network marketing. The section that resonated with me the most was:

People respond to your campaign, you, THEN your business opportunity.

I first started with Put Health Back in Healthcare, which then expanded to Building Better Communities. I am happy that Market America is so diverse that I’m able to work with various professionals – veterinarians, health professionals, financial advisers, new musical artists, makeup artists, business owners, gym owners and instructors, to name a few – but then I also get to work with entrepreneurs and people who want a change in their lives. I love what I am doing.

With this summary of the year, yesterday I saw the TedTalks of Dr Joel Fuhrman. It reminded me of my New Year’s Resolution for a 85-90% plant based diet. I went to the library and borrowed his book Eat to Live and am now a quarter way through the book which also touches on another resolution to read a book a month. I’m now talking to anyone who will listen to me about what I do and my goals which is another resolution of being a Positive Force in the community.

I love how the experiences of the past couple years have made me able to succeed in changing my life to fulfill these resolutions. I still have a few resolutions to live out: Leading by Example, Helping Others Succeed, Becoming Financially Free, and Traveling the World. And know that the actions I’m doing now will help me reach those in the near future.

Looking back over the year and thinking of your New Year’s Resolutions are you there yet? Or at least much closer to having changed your life from last December? ALL the Best to you and Best Wishes in your endeavors!

Desires and Fear

Image
Desires and Fear

When one begins a new endeavor there is a passion, an energy, a calling. However, within a few weeks another feeling come into play… Fear. A few fears are that someone will criticize, that you may fail, or that people will turn against you. The fear that I battle with every day is the fear of succeeding – growing away from the friends that I have and them resenting me, having new responsibilities when I’m finally understanding and feeling comfortable with the ones I have, and feeling isolated.

The rational part of my brain is looking at these reasons and worked through them – many of my friends are struggling, so I either need to set a successful example or I need a new set of people to associate with. I enjoy challenges and when I work for someone else I relish in giving myself new responsibilities. And I am around people for half of the day who enjoy my company and me just for being me – these are the swim parents, PTSA moms and music parents.

I desire to change the world and have my name be known… not so much me but my name. I want to help the next generation to be aware of better ways to live their lives and reach their dreams. I want to inspire people to LIVE BIG! I want to be known as the person who enjoys helping people and makes a positive difference in others lives. I want to be known as the person who gives others an honest opportunity and works with them to succeed. I want to be know as the person who builds large royalty incomes for non profit organizations while helping health professionals, veterinarians, business owners, entrepreneurs, financial planners, and budding artists earn a secondary income while enhancing their current occupations.

What are your desires? What are the fears that stop you from moving towards those desires? May I help?

Take a Leap to the Better Bowl

Take a Leap to the Better Bowl

With yesterday’s post hopefully you stopped to take stock of your life and your feelings. Do you feel fulfilled with what you are doing for work? At the end of the day, do you feel like you made a difference in someone else’s life? Do you wish you had more in life? More time? More money? More freedom?

I chose this picture because it depicts society. The small bowl is overcrowded and limiting while the big bowl has only a few. Wouldn’t you want to switch to the bigger bowl?

A study by the World Institute for Development Economics Research at United Nations University reported that the richest 1% of adults alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total. With that said Why do people listen to those around them who try to stop them? Getting a good education and finding a job isn’t working anymore. Don’t you think it might be better to do something different?

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

Every time I hear the song Defying Gravity from Wicked the Musical I cry when she states:

I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

I’m through accepting limits
‘Cuz someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!

She reached to point to say No I need to do what I want to do and see if it will be better for me. These 2 parts resonate with me. And gives me strength.

Why don’t you take that leap? Is it because a part of you needs proof that you can be great? Why don’t you turn your thoughts around to take the leap because what you are currently doing hasn’t caused something great to happen? Whether the leap is to quit your job, start a network marketing opportunity, perform with a dance class, write a book, talk to that person you like. Regret should only occur when you fail to act. Think of it, if you act and it doesn’t work out you are a step closer to your goal. You know what not to do, or that there is better out there for you.

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK?

Are you a person who needs to wait and see? I think Dr Seuss said it Best in the book Oh the Places You’ll Go:

You can get so confused
that you’ll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place…

…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You’ll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

Dr Seuss at the end of the book says:

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

… you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

Believe in yourself and take action! Jump to the Big Bowl!

Being vs Feeling Helpless

Being vs Feeling Helpless

I’m sure you looked at that picture and thought to yourself “That Sucks!” but being a picture there was nothing that you could do about it. If you were to step out of your life and look at it objectively with our thoughts and feelings would you say the same thing?

A few years ago a friend of mine was in a job that she absolutely hated. Her beloved company was bought out and the new company was ridding itself of the employees of the original company.  Her new boss had no idea what needed to be done and didn’t build employee morale. While my friend was at work she was expected to train her boss who was unappreciative and rude. Every time my friend had a bad day she would call and complain to me. And my comment would always be to brush up the resume and start looking. These words went unheeded until she was laid off along with the last 1/4th of the original company. Strangely enough my friend was DEVISTATED! I couldn’t for the life of me understand how she was so upset when EVERY DAY she was upset!? The funny thing is that less that 5 weeks later she had another job… that she liked! Why did she stay?

In my last job my coworker was verbally belittled and blamed for everything that went wrong in the office, including mistakes that were made before she worked at the company. My boss had it out for her and in meeting would let loose a barrage of barbs aimed at my coworker. There were a couple of time when my coworker was shaking from being emotionally overwhelmed! The rest of the office would tell her to start looking for other work as this the boss has it out for her and her response was that she was a single mom with no family to help her. I left the company and a couple months later she was fired. She was written up for 5 year old mistakes (she wasn’t working there at the time), mistakes that I made and corrected, and overlooking some details. In the past couple months she has been unemployed looking for work. Why did she stay?

I experienced these two incidents and the question Why did these two hard working, sharp women stay in such negativity? Did they not think they were good enough to find something better? Did they think this was the best that they could get?

Too many people don’t think that they can succeed in attaining their dreams and with that thought they don’t even bother to attempt to try. They think this is probably the best they can have.

My own story… When I first decided to quit my job a part of me said that I wasn’t going to succeed, that I would need a job in a few months. There were so many people who told me that this is crazy and still ask me every time they see me if I found my way and got another job. It doesn’t matter that I have plenty of experience with customer service, training others, communications, interpersonal skills, public speaking and business. It doesn’t matter that I’m working much harder for myself than I was for my last job. The only thing they see is I don’t have the gold level health insurance or paid vacations. It doesn’t matter that I am happier now, am able to be at my son’s school or events when needed, and can set my hours to any time.

Something pushed me to the breaking point and a part of me knew that I am able giving me the courage to leave. Over the past few months I’ve worked through hurdles, reached epiphanies, and spoke with hundreds of people. Over the past couple weeks the seeds that I planted are finally breaking the surface and I’m seeing results. The feelings of helplessness are lifting and I can appreciate that I was never actually helpless to attain my goals!

Different from the World

Standard
Different from the World

I look at how school teaches my son and his classmates. The kids are taught how to follow directions, sit still and quietly, and to memorize information that they can Google.

Kids come out of school not knowing how to think for themselves into a society that has no jobs for them, but has taught them that this is the only acceptable path to take. Graduates are either unemployed or underemployed, or they can’t find a job in their area of study while they still have student loans to pay.

Shouldn’t we be exposing them to think differently. There are some amazing books:

  • Risky is the New Safe: The Rules Have Changed…     by Randy Gage
  • Linchpin: Are you indispensable?     by Seth Godin
  • Rich Dad, Poor Dad     by Robert T. Kiyosaki
  • Think and Grow Rich    by Napoleon Hill
  • The Richest Man in Babylon     by George S. Clason
  • How to Win Friends and Influence People    by Dale Carnegie
  • Secrets of a Millionaire Mind    by T Harv Eker

Something I’m interested in doing in my son’s school is to start an entrepreneur club. Teaching goal setting, how to break down the goals into small daily steps, useful business skill and personal improvement skills. I also want to empower them to think BIGGER, be confident in themselves and their abilities and have the courage to be different.

If you have a dream, I hope you have the desire and the confidence to fulfill it. Just know you can always contact me to help you on your way.

Follow Your Passion

Follow Your Passion

Do you remember what your passion is? Are you happily living your passion?

When I ask random people one of my favorite questions “If you had a Billion dollars, what would you be doing?” 8 out of 10 will tell me: quit my job, pay off all my bills, buy [whatever toys], and take a vacation. When I dig a little deeper I hear: I don’t know or I never really thought of that.

Why are dreams stamped out by others?

When I told my dad that I wanted to be a parapsychologist and get my degree at Duke University, he told me parapsychology is a rich man’s hobby.

When I wanted to be a priest (I went to Catholic school) the head nun told me that only a man can become a priest. As a woman I can become a nun. What is up with that?

Why do we allow others to stamp out our dreams?

It wasn’t until this year that I decided that I serve the world better when I do what makes me happy. I enjoy meeting people, talking to people, hearing about their dreams and goals, and helping them attain them. Not only do I get a sense of accomplishment, I am a positive role model for my son and his friends.

My son has always been taught that he can accomplish anything he set his mind to as long as he decides every day that that is what he wants to do and is working towards the goal. When it comes to swim practice I don’t have to force him as he is the one who will be upset with the results of his next meet. I have always taught him about accountability and responsibility. That he is the creator of his life and through his decisions makes his own path.

Sometimes the push that others give, put us on a better road that the original one

I got my bachelor in Business (my 10th declared major – my parents just wanted me to finish “with PE if needed”) and then got a master in IT. I must admit that I truly feel in my element when I restructure a business that has grown too fast, make a computer system scalable, and teach coworkers professional skills.  There is so much more that I have in my sights and decide every day to move towards.

Maybe dreams ARE just goals with no deadline… I can still become a parapsychologist; however, I don’t want to be a priest any more. If it wasn’t for some of my “dream stealers” I wouldn’t have my big dreams now or love what I do.

Are you answering your question?

Standard
Are you answering your question?

I know I was raised to get a good education, get a good paying job and I will be happy. I found this not to be true.

I got a bachelor in business and a master in IT. Most of the time I had to dumb down my resume to even be considered for a position, then when I got the job I out grew it within months. My mind was different than most of my coworkers. I learned what I had to do, then I would look at how the system worked. My way of thinking is make the system as effective and efficient as possible. This didn’t go over well most of the time. Many supervisors thought I was trying to take their position… furthest thing from my mind. Also when I lost the feeling of accomplishment or saw that they preferred to be redundant and obsolete I had to leave.

I need to feel like I am making a difference in other people’s lives. My favorite position to date was when I went door to door as “acquisitions” and customer service for a telecommunication company. Their new service was becoming available in small pockets of the county. I was the person to introduce customers to the new product and make sure they were satisfied with what they currently had. I loved training my co-workers, meeting people at their homes, and helping them save money after looking over their bills and making them aware of their service and spending. One customer saved over $150 per month with this new program and looking up the number instead of calling 411. Not everyone was open to the new service and I was only yelled at once – by a man who told me to come back.

I was honest and told people when what they currently had was the best they could afford. I got phone calls thanking me by their families for being so honest. I was the face of customer service in the areas that I oversaw. I held this position over 6 years ago and sometimes will run into someone that I had visited. I was impressed that those I ran into remembered my name and truly cared about my well being. Just recollecting the artist at a Arts Festival in South Miami or a woman at Costco brings me to tears knowing that I made such an impact that they remembered me so long after I had visited them at their homes.

I feel that this is the answer to my life questions. How can I best serve my community? How can I truly make a positive difference?
