What are you doing for others?

Today was a day to fully wake up. I went to a Fantastic BNI meeting – I recommend everyone join a BNI if they are a business owner or professional. I got to meet 24 professionals and had an interesting time talking about myself. Another thing I got were 3 referrals.

Then I went to my son’s middle school for a PTSA meeting that was rescheduled. I had a great time. I got to speak to the principle and a few of the office staff. When I gave the magnet advisor my card and explained why I wanted to talk to the PTSA she got SO EXCITED! She was blown away with how I utilize my company to help non-profits with fundraising and help their supporters earn an extra income.

Tomorrow I have 23 local elementary, k-8, and middle school PTA/PTSAs, 5 local charities which focus on music (orchestral and choral), swimming (for young kids – Florida is the leading state for childhood drowning), and abuse towards kids (physical, emotional, and sexual), and a couple churches to contact.

I think I’ve found my life’s passion. I enjoy working with people and teaching others “a Better Way of Life”. Now the courage to talk to people who have no understanding of what I do.

Collecting My Thoughts

Standard

I’ve been writing a manifesto to Build a Better Community. I recently heard a quote that resonated with me. Reese from Person of Interest said “We don’t need jobs. We need a purpose.” This was the most resounding statement I had ever heard because in my opinion this is exactly what we as a people are missing.

While doing research on unemployment and underemployment, I found the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) News Release which was publicized on September 5, 2014. It has officially been concluded that the unemployment rate in the United States is 6.1% for August 2014. How does this branch of the government come to this conclusion?

Does 6.1% take into consideration civilians who are underemployed?  I think this a very serious issue. On the BLS website the overall unemployed and underemployed stat for August 2014 is a whopping 12.0%. With that said, the Economic Policy Institute finds that a total of 16.8 percent of new grads are “underemployed,” meaning they’re either jobless and hunting for work; working part-time because they can’t find a full-time job; or want a job, have looked within the past year, but have now given up on searching. What are we the people doing about this?

Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) collected test results from about 28 million 15 year old students representing 65 countries in 2012. In the key findings of the PISA 2012 results, US ranks 27th in math, 17th in reading and 20th in science out of the 34 OECD countries. To top it off we also spend more per student than most countries. When my son was in the second grade, he came home saying the school told the kids to tell the parents that C is average and okay! I was floored! In my household growing up a C was equivalent to an F now we are being told that a C is okay. With that in mind are we as a nation trying to be average?

When a young adult graduates and enters the workforce, majority had been taught to follow when many companies need fresh eyes to more updated and scalable systems. To make matters worse, companies prefer to focus on share holders and the bottom line; while too many workers are doing just enough to not get fired. Many work environments are based on competition and the fear of losing one’s job. Think… how does one usually get a promotion within a department? A higher up needs to be fired, laid off, or retire. Job Security doesn’t exist anymore. When the average person gets a “promotion” do they receive a salary increase to go with the additional workload?

I think society can only be changed from the bottom up and with a people who accept the need to change and have the courage to move in a different direction. I want my community to benefit from “forward” thinking and proven results. The era of the corporation has ended. While people are looking for jobs, are being exploited for inadequate pay, or are limited to part time hours for full time work, there is a whole other way of making a living. While some condemn all network marketing as pyramid schemes, one must ask one’s self hasn’t there been conventional companies where a vast majority of the employees were left with nothing when a few key people financially gained. Moreover, isn’t failure more likely if one isn’t taught the basic skills needed to succeed?

I decided this year to be the change I want to see in the world. Are you ready to make that decision?

Take a Leap to the Better Bowl

Take a Leap to the Better Bowl

With yesterday’s post hopefully you stopped to take stock of your life and your feelings. Do you feel fulfilled with what you are doing for work? At the end of the day, do you feel like you made a difference in someone else’s life? Do you wish you had more in life? More time? More money? More freedom?

I chose this picture because it depicts society. The small bowl is overcrowded and limiting while the big bowl has only a few. Wouldn’t you want to switch to the bigger bowl?

A study by the World Institute for Development Economics Research at United Nations University reported that the richest 1% of adults alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total. With that said Why do people listen to those around them who try to stop them? Getting a good education and finding a job isn’t working anymore. Don’t you think it might be better to do something different?

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE

Every time I hear the song Defying Gravity from Wicked the Musical I cry when she states:

I’m through with playing by the rules
Of someone else’s game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It’s time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes: and leap!

I’m through accepting limits
‘Cuz someone says they’re so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I’ll never know!

She reached to point to say No I need to do what I want to do and see if it will be better for me. These 2 parts resonate with me. And gives me strength.

Why don’t you take that leap? Is it because a part of you needs proof that you can be great? Why don’t you turn your thoughts around to take the leap because what you are currently doing hasn’t caused something great to happen? Whether the leap is to quit your job, start a network marketing opportunity, perform with a dance class, write a book, talk to that person you like. Regret should only occur when you fail to act. Think of it, if you act and it doesn’t work out you are a step closer to your goal. You know what not to do, or that there is better out there for you.

WHAT IS HOLDING YOU BACK?

Are you a person who needs to wait and see? I think Dr Seuss said it Best in the book Oh the Places You’ll Go:

You can get so confused
that you’ll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place…

…for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That’s not for you!

Somehow you’ll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You’ll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

Dr Seuss at the end of the book says:

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU’LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

… you’re off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So…get on your way!

Believe in yourself and take action! Jump to the Big Bowl!

Being vs Feeling Helpless

Being vs Feeling Helpless

I’m sure you looked at that picture and thought to yourself “That Sucks!” but being a picture there was nothing that you could do about it. If you were to step out of your life and look at it objectively with our thoughts and feelings would you say the same thing?

A few years ago a friend of mine was in a job that she absolutely hated. Her beloved company was bought out and the new company was ridding itself of the employees of the original company.  Her new boss had no idea what needed to be done and didn’t build employee morale. While my friend was at work she was expected to train her boss who was unappreciative and rude. Every time my friend had a bad day she would call and complain to me. And my comment would always be to brush up the resume and start looking. These words went unheeded until she was laid off along with the last 1/4th of the original company. Strangely enough my friend was DEVISTATED! I couldn’t for the life of me understand how she was so upset when EVERY DAY she was upset!? The funny thing is that less that 5 weeks later she had another job… that she liked! Why did she stay?

In my last job my coworker was verbally belittled and blamed for everything that went wrong in the office, including mistakes that were made before she worked at the company. My boss had it out for her and in meeting would let loose a barrage of barbs aimed at my coworker. There were a couple of time when my coworker was shaking from being emotionally overwhelmed! The rest of the office would tell her to start looking for other work as this the boss has it out for her and her response was that she was a single mom with no family to help her. I left the company and a couple months later she was fired. She was written up for 5 year old mistakes (she wasn’t working there at the time), mistakes that I made and corrected, and overlooking some details. In the past couple months she has been unemployed looking for work. Why did she stay?

I experienced these two incidents and the question Why did these two hard working, sharp women stay in such negativity? Did they not think they were good enough to find something better? Did they think this was the best that they could get?

Too many people don’t think that they can succeed in attaining their dreams and with that thought they don’t even bother to attempt to try. They think this is probably the best they can have.

My own story… When I first decided to quit my job a part of me said that I wasn’t going to succeed, that I would need a job in a few months. There were so many people who told me that this is crazy and still ask me every time they see me if I found my way and got another job. It doesn’t matter that I have plenty of experience with customer service, training others, communications, interpersonal skills, public speaking and business. It doesn’t matter that I’m working much harder for myself than I was for my last job. The only thing they see is I don’t have the gold level health insurance or paid vacations. It doesn’t matter that I am happier now, am able to be at my son’s school or events when needed, and can set my hours to any time.

Something pushed me to the breaking point and a part of me knew that I am able giving me the courage to leave. Over the past few months I’ve worked through hurdles, reached epiphanies, and spoke with hundreds of people. Over the past couple weeks the seeds that I planted are finally breaking the surface and I’m seeing results. The feelings of helplessness are lifting and I can appreciate that I was never actually helpless to attain my goals!

Be Yourself – Your True Self

Be Yourself – Your True Self

I love this quote. The world will try to change you into someone else –  have you ever had a dream, but didn’t follow it because you heard “It would be wrong”, “that’s not how the world works”, or “stop being a dreamer”. I’ve seen the looks of “you poor thing, that will never work” or “I don’t want you to get hurt”.

Don’t let them – Be yourself, follow your dreams, Proudly Show Your Brilliance

There is only one you with your strengths, weaknesses, experiences and dreams. There has been no one like you since before the dawn of time and will never be another like you to the end of time. You are truly Amazing and the world is a Better Place because you are in it.

I think the world would be a much better, more interesting place if everyone had the courage to contribute their Brilliance.

I’m watching the movie The Mummy (one of my favorite shows). A scene that always gets me is when she is upset that the Bembridge Scholars had rejected her application. This saddens me as so many people will see themselves as “not enough” and will give up. Could you imagine a world without Dr Seuss? Theodore Geisel was rejected 27 times. How about Judy Bloom or J.K. Rowling? Walt Disney? Oprah? Thomas Edison? Steve Jobs? Bill Gates? Albert Einstein? Steven Spielberg?

Seth Godin stated “Reject the tyranny of being picked: pick yourself” Are you going to let someone stop you? Or are you going to decide to Be Yourself?

Take that Bembridge  Scholars!

For My Son – a Very Important Ripple

For My Son – a Very Important Ripple

When I think of doing anything I think how does it affect my life and how will it help me be a role model for my son

Growing up I remember my mom’s family told me to travel the world, experience all that I can, and do everything I can before I got married. For the longest time I felt that getting married was life ending. I eloped after dating a really nice guy for 2 years. After a year we moved to Los Angeles and I announced my marriage along with the coming birth of my son.

He came after we had decided to wait for 5 years. I thank the Universe every day for such a Fantastic child. I see my beauty, my strength, my dreams, my goals. I got to hear him talk to his friends when he was in the 3rd grade. He told them how his mom works at home and how she is always able to be there. To him this was the norm.

Later that year I took a job as a door to door “sales person”. I loved what I did, but I worked LONG HOURS! Sometimes I would come home to my little person waiting up for me. I remember one night I scolded him for not being asleep. It took me a shower to realize what I had done… I was scolding my child for wanting to see me and spend time with me!!

I love spending time with him, volunteering at his school, supporting him at swim meets, and watching him in orchestra. I love that he volunteers locally, helps those around him, and takes responsibility for what he has to do and accountability for what he has done. I was pleasantly surprised that he has inherited my love for traveling, public speaking, and helping others. I’ve always told him that my job as a mom is to make sure he grows up to become an upstanding citizen of the planet.

I want to Build a Better Community for my son and I’m happy he wants to help me.

Raising my Son to be a Real Life Hero

Video

I remember almost every time I talk to my son about doing “Random Acts of Kindness”, not for the thanks and praise but because he knows it is the right thing to do. I’ve seen/heard of him do little things for people: going into a pool between races to get goggles for a little girl whose goggle fell off during her race, giving directions to his substitute bus driver, to name a couple. As I tell him, my job as a parent isn’t to be his friend but to make sure he grows up to be a Great Man and Leader AND an Upstanding Citizen of the Planet.
